Pea Soup House
Architecture for Community
FCBStudios won an RIBA open call competition to rethink community within the built environment. They developed ‘Pea Soup House,’ a colorful mobile installation designed to raise awareness of London’s air pollution. Built in collaboration with Expedition and the London Festival of Architecture (LFA), the project draws inspiration from London’s smoggy past, when the air was as “thick as pea soup.”
Pea Soup House serves soup daily, reflecting the Air Quality Index (AQI) and collaborates with King’s College to monitor air pollution across London. This installation was featured in the 2016 ‘At Home in Britain’ exhibition.
Since Pea Soup House last served its thick green soups in 2016, research shows that there has been a significant reduction - approx 22% - in NO2 across the City, between 2016 and 2019. Extension of the London ULEZ zones will help to reduce this further.
